Paternity Lawyer/Attorney, Colorado Springs

Experienced Paternity Lawyers/Attorneys, Colorado Springs Area

Many circumstances exist where a paternity test is necessary.  Whether you have been served with a notice of an impending paternity action, or you wish to establish paternity rights with your children, it is wise to consult with an experienced and local Colorado Springs paternity lawyer/attorney.

Even when a child is very young, it makes sense to establish paternity as early as possible.  If you live in the Colorado Springs area, and you need legal advice to help you establish your child’s paternity, please contact Marrison Family Law.  Our experienced and knowledgeable paternity lawyers will guide you through the steps you need to take.

Basic Paternity Facts for Colorado

In Colorado, you do not need to be in a divorce situation to file a petition for paternity.  Your attorney/lawyer can file this petition at any time, and this option is available to both married and unmarried parents.

However, if a father’s name is printed on a child’s birth certificate, unless you have a valid reason to question it, there is no need to pursue this option.   It is important to note that a motion of the mother to deny paternity can only be filed within five years of a child’s birth. Once the Colorado court establishes paternity, a determination will need to be made about parental rights and responsibilities.  These include child support, visitation or parenting time and custody, or decision making.

Psychological Parents in Colorado

While biological testing is an important step in determining paternity rights for unmarried fathers, in the state of Colorado being a biological parent is not the only way to establish paternity.  Even if an adoption has not taken place, a “defacto parent” or person who has been a constant presence in a child’s life may still be granted parental rights.  If you fit this description, and would like to find out more about how to continue your positive presence in that child’s life, you should contact a local Colorado Springs paternity lawyer/attorney who understands what needs to be done.  At the Marrison Family Law, we can help you.
