Looking for a Colorado Health Plan? Choose the Right Broker

colorado_health_plan_3Have you been searching for affordable health insurance, only to find that it doesn’t exist?  You may be looking in all the wrong places, or perhaps your expectations are too high.  People who have enjoyed the benefits of an employer-sponsored Colorado health plan may be shocked when they learn how much less coverage they will get from an individual plan.  For example, most individual plans do not include coverage for maternity; nor do they offer a comprehensive prescription drug plan.  While it’s always possible to add these on as a rider, the cost can be astronomical.

If you’re not sure you can afford to get an individual Colorado health plan, it helps to find a broker who will be able to help.  Not every online broker is interested in helping you find the right plan for your needs; in fact, many of them only sell plans from one or two health insurance companies.  Ideally, you will want to find a broker who can help you with a variety of different plans, from the least expensive high-deductible health plan to the PPO with a $10 co-pay.  There is no substitute for the right health coverage, and it is never recommended to go without any form of coverage.  Even if you are in between jobs or waiting for group health coverage to begin, the right broker will help you avoid too much risk.

In a recent article by one of my favorite Colorado health insurance brokers, “How to Find the Best Colorado Health Plan for Your MoneyHow to Find the Best Colorado Health Plan for Your Money,” HealthQuotes.com recommends avoiding the online form for a “quick quote,” saying this usually results in a barrage of unwanted phone calls and emails.  A better idea is to work with a broker who will help you avoid paying too much for a Colorado health plan; someone who really has your best interests at heart.  Keep in mind, however, that no broker can guarantee you a low rate until the insurance company has reviewed your medical history.  Insurance providers may not be allowed to discriminate within an employer’s group health plan, but the rates for individual plans are contingent upon your risk category.  An underwriter will raise your rate for being overweight, having hypertension or another chronic health problem.

It is always easier to find a Colorado health plan when you are working with an experienced health insurance broker.  If you’re just as careful with choosing a broker as you are with choosing a healthcare provider, you will be much more satisfied with your health plan.
