Medigap Drug Benefits – Do You Know Your Options?

medigap_drug_benefitsIf you’re approaching the age of 65 or you expect to become eligible for Medicare, then chances are you have some questions about Medigap drug benefits.  Planning ahead and learning about your options will help you avoid any delays in Medicare enrollment.  As an insurance broker specializing Colorado health insurance, I work with a lot of clients who have questions about spousal Medicare benefits and how Medicare eligibility changes in the event of a divorce. A lot of these questions are referred to the attorneys at the Marrison Family Law LLC, but I can help them with Medigap enrollment.

Choosing the best plan for Medigap drug benefits often depends on where you live.  For example, if you live in a part of the state where Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private health insurance companies, then you can choose this all-inclusive plan instead of buying a Medigap plan.  However, not everyone is looking for the standardized plans offered by Medicare Advantage.  Oftentimes, a person who gets Medicare before the age of 65 will wait until they are older before seeking out additional benefits, especially if they are still in good health.

With Medicare and Medigap, everything is divided into letter-based categories, such as Part A and Part B.  Medigap drug benefits are often called Medicare Part DMedigap drug benefits are often called Medicare Part D, but there are several other ways to purchase Medicare supplements.  The plan you end up buying will all depend on the level of prescription drug coverage you need.

In a recent article by HealthQuotes.com (“What are the Best Options for Medigap Drug Benefits?”), they noted that most seniors enjoy the simplicity of a Medicare Advantage program over the complexity of supplemental coverage, but this is why it makes sense to work with a broker.  A broker will put together a list of options that include both Medicare Advantage and Medigap prescription drug benefits to see which one makes the most sense for an individual client.  You may be surprised to learn that a Medigap plan is often more affordable and more comprehensive than what is offered by many private insurance companies.

For example, like every other Medicare supplement, Medigap drug benefits include a predetermined level of coverage.  While they may be sold by private insurance companies, these plans cannot differ from one another in terms of coverage.  The only thing that changes is the price.
